The Mulberry Project's Summer 2018 concerts feature international musicians who specialize in the revival of rare Ottoman-Turkish and Balkan music.

Inspired by the lively performance aesthetic documented on thousands of 78 RPM records from the region, the members of the Mulberry Project present new compositions in addition to the core repertoire of folk and urban art music from Istanbul and beyond.

These concerts are dedicated to the memory of oud master Haig Manoukian.

Istanbul’s musical landscape in the early 20th century (pre-WWI) was a reflection of its incredibly diverse population. For centuries, Turks, Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Arabs, Kurds, and other linguistic, ethnic, and religious groups actively contributed to the cultural life of “The City” where the artistic patronage of the court, the millenia of sacred musical traditions, and the migration of folk musics came together to form a uniquely urban art music genre. This genre is built upon a complex modal system called makam, which combines microtonal scale fragments with idioms governing melodic direction, ornamentation, improvisation, and rhythm. This makam system governs performances, whether they occur in solemn spaces for religious reflection or in the rowdy wine-taverns documented in 19th-century accounts.

Thanks to thousands of 78 RPM records, we have a snapshot of this lively milieu rendered by master musicians who were steeped in the performance aesthetics of the late Ottoman empire. These traditions were imported to North America, primarily by the large migration of Armenians and Greeks seeking refuge from the catastrophic events. As they rebuilt communities in Boston, New York, Chicago, and other cities, they retained many of the stylistic musical elements that were either repressed or fell out of fashion in Republican Turkey.

Most of the musicians featured in this evening’s concert performed actively with Haig Manoukian, the late Armenian-American oud master who was a fixture of the New York Middle Eastern music scene for several decades. Some of the repertoire was developed in collaboration with Haig over the years, and some includes new compositions by the musicians featured here. Whether the compositions are new or old, the members of the Mulberry Project seek to breathe life into a timeless tradition, inspired by the compelling glimpses left behind by the master musicians of past generations.
